In 1895 one of the most important works for piano trio in the Spanish repertoire appeared: the Trio in C major op. 50 by Enrique Granados. Granados' trio is a solid and inspired attempt to combine the great Central European romantic forms with a distinctly Spanish language inspired by the teachings of Felipe Pedrell; a work with a complex formal structure very much in keeping with the European late romantic tradition and an inspired content of a personal and poetic nature.
Granados' trio premiered in Madrid with Granados himself on the piano, Julio Francés on the violin and a young 17-year-old cellist, Pablo Casals, a student at the Madrid Conservatory at the time. The work was not played again during Granados' lifetime and after his tragic death, it remained forgotten until it was presented in a faulty manner in 1976 in an unfortunate edition by Unión Musical Española on which other problematic editions have subsequently been based.
The Granados Trio is a solid and inspired attempt to combine the great Central European romantic forms with a distinctly Spanish language.
— Juan Carlos Garvayo, pianista
The Arbós Trio has been working with this work since its inception and recorded it for the IBS label in 2018. To celebrate its 25 years of existence, the Arbós Trio wants to make the critical edition by its pianist Juan Carlos Garvayo, based on a meticulous study of Enrique Granados' autograph manuscript, freely available and openly available. This edition is part of his doctoral thesis, which he defended cum laude at the Autonomous University of Madrid. In addition to a preface offering previously unpublished information about the work, the edition includes alternative violin and cello parts, edited by the members of the Arbós Trio Ferdinando Trematore and José Miguel Gómez.
